is going down to the wire, where persuadable voters could decide the election. and the harris campaign right now is hoping the backlash from that weekend trump rally in a series of derogatory comments and jokings there will give them a late lift as both harris and trump countdown to election day. in the campaign's final week the fight is on for the small number of battleground voters who may still be up for grabs. >> can we hear it for our first-time voters? >> we're close to winning this. >> reporter: former president trump's campaign still dealing with fallout from sunday's row kus rally at madison square garden where several speakers made a variety of racist, sexist and crude comments. >> there is literally a floating island of garbage the middle of the ocean right now. i think it's called puerto rico. >> reporter: some republican lawmakers denouncing that joke. trump ally peter navarro posting it gave the other side something to hang on to. it was just stupid. the head of the republican party

in puerto rico saying he would with hold support until trump apologized. the trump campaign has distanced itself from that joke. but trump has not denounced it. his running mate jd vance down playing it. >> i think that we have to stop getting so offended at every little they think in the united states of america. i'm just so over it. >> reporter: harris' team looking to capitalize in a new digital ad targeting swing states. >> puerto ricans deserve better. >> like pennsylvania where president biden won the state by roughly 80,000 votes in 2020. it's home to more than 300,000 eligible puerto rican voters. democrats are hoping the controversy could be a difference maker. the comments have been noticed there -- >> that rally brought up a whole bunch of issues. >> reporter: but some say their unfazed. >> i didn't get offended. >> harris responding to the rally. >> fans the fuel of hate and division. >> reporter: trump saying she stokes division after he's repeatedly called democrats the enemy from within.

>> kamala is running a campaign of demonization and hate. >> reporter: and slamming her for calling him a fascist. >> but she's a fascist, okay. she's a fascist. >> reporter: meanwhile a clear gender gap developed between the candidates supporters, video emerged of a recent hot mic moment between harris and michigan's governor. as president obama on the trail yesterday spoke directly to male voters. >> some men who seem to think trump's behavior is somehow a sign of strength. you know, sort of the macho, fake macho thing. that's not what real strength is. >> reporter: and tonight only a short distance from here with a white house as her backdrop, vice president harris is going to deliver her closing argument, calling on americans to turn the page on the trumper ra from the very spot where donald trump spoke on january 6th, urging her supporters to mar to the capital.

for his part, trump is scheduled to speak before a pair of events in pennsylvania today. savannah. >> peter thank you. a closer look at where this race stands one week away. let us turn to the king of the big board, nbc's national political correspondent steve kornacki. good morning. so here we are. this is the national race. one week out. this is the snapshot. >> and we say it's close, but i think one thing to keep in mind, too, remember the last two elections when donald trump ran, looked very different at this point. so harris with an advantage nationally now on average of 1.1 points over trump. four years ago, on this day, the national poll average was joe biden by 7.4 points. look at that difference. go back to 2016. on this day, hillary clinton's advantage was 4.6. so the polling has just been much tighter this time around. for a long time now. >> there were polling misses in 2016 and 2020. so we'll see how much of a differential that is. let's look at the battlegrounds. we vote by electoral college. this is where the votes really count.

show us the swing states. >> you can tell us how tight they are. the candidate ahead here, the margins are so slim. >> one thing to think about, look at the three where harris does have a small, small advantage. if she does hold michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin, if there's no surprise anywhere else, she will have exactly 270 electoral votes and from trump's standpoint to show you how tight this is, look, the poll right now has -- the average has him slightly ahead in north carolina. slightly ahead in georgia. if he gets those two, all he would need to get exactly 270 is to change pennsylvania where the average right now is just .6 of 1 point to harris. do that and trump has exactly 270. >> well, that explains why the candidates have been parked in pennsylvania for the last couple months for the most part. let's talk about the gender gap. it's really looking like this may well be the story of the election. whose voters show up in greater number in terms of women and men. >> it's fascinating. our own nbc poll found this recently.

now our friends at cnbc with a new poll again showing what would be a historic gender gap. among men, donald trump with a 17-point advantage other harris. among women, harris with a 12-point advantage among men. that's a total of 29 point gender gap. that would be higher than anything we have seen. the one thing i note, though, we often talked in the past about the gender gap helping the democrats. it's often netted out. the republicans think they may be turning the tables again, like in our nbc poll, a bigger advantage for trump with men than harris has with women. republicans think this may net out in their favor this time. that would be a ch that would be a change. that's a big if. >> thank you so much that's where we stand one week out. we'll see you soon, steve. thank you. sg, thank you. another issue surrounding the 2024 race, the safety of election workers and officials who are facing increasing threats as november 5th looms. nbc stephanie gosk joins with us that part of the story. hey, steph, good morning. >> hoe ad good morning. the fbi and department of

homeland security are warning law enforcement nationwide over a thread from violent domestic extremists. that's according to a joint intelligence bulletin reviewed by nbc news. now when voters go to the polls, they will likely see increased security because of that. everything from more police, metal detecters, even bullet proof glass. this morning, with early voting under way nationwide, a growing list of alarming incidents in the build-up to election day. multiple ballot box fires set by incendiary devices in portland, oregon and vancouver, washington. where hundreds of ballots were destroyed. authorities say this suspect vehicle was spotted at both sites. but they haven't made any arrests. >> acts like this are part and intentional. and we're concerned about that intentional act trying to affect the election process. >> reporter: in a texas voting center where campaign materials are not allowed by law, a man alledgedly assaulted an election clerk who told him to remove a maga hat.

>> i can't think of anything like this happening during my time here as sheriff and i certainly hope to never see it again. >> reporter: with election worker safety amok their concerns, state and local election officials tell nbc news they've put in a range of new security measures since 2020. there's bullet proof glass at the board of elections office in maryland. the mail room in durham county, north carolina, soon to be equipped with a panic button. and in maricopa county, arizona, snipers will be set up on the tabulation center's rooftop. in philadelphia, mail-in ballots will be counted in this warehouse outside the city center. >> count all legal votes. >> reporter: four years ago the count looked like this at the convention center downtown. >> we will have a very heavy law enforcement presence. >> reporter: city commissioner seth blue steen says this time around they have more control with gates, fences topped with barbed wire and multiple check points. do you feel like you need that security for this election?
