India is celebrating its 74th Republic Day on 26 January across the country with full zeal and enthusiasm. President Droupadi Murmu led the nation from Kartavya Path, New Delhi on Thursday. This year, India has invited Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as the chief guest of the parade.
The 74th Republic Day Parade kicked-off at around 10:30 am. The grand parade at Kartavya Path commenced with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the National war memorial. After that, the national flag will be unfurled followed by the national anthem with a 21-gun salute using 105-mm Indian Field Guns. It will replace the age-old tradition of the 25-pounder gun salute, reflecting upon the growing "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" in Defence.

On the occasion of India's 74th Republic Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for celebrating the diverse culture of the country with his sartorial choices, donned a multi-coloured Rajasthani turban this year to symbolize India's diversity.
Last year, the PM sported a unique Uttarakhand traditional cap, which was embellished with a Brahmakamal-inspired brooch. Brahma Kamal is the state flower of Uttarakhand that the PM uses whenever he visits Kedarnath for pooja.

Republic Day parade: Clouds cloak Delhi skies today
Overcast conditions prevailed in Delhi on Republic Day. The national capital is likely to see cloudy skies for the next four to five days.
A fresh western disturbance may lead to light rainfall on January 29, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Importance of India's Republic Day
On this day in 1950, India declared itself a sovereign, democratic, and republic state with the adoption of the Constitution.
India gained its freedom from the British Empire in 1947 and began drafting its Constitution soon after. The India Constituent Assembly took two years to discuss, modify, and approve the governing document, and when adopted, India became the country with the longest constitution. The adoption of this document paved the way for democracy and empowered Indian citizens to elect their own representatives.

Republic Day parade 2023: Egyptian President to be the chief guest
On the 74th Republic Day celebration, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will be the chief guest on Thursday. It is for the first time that an Egyptian leader has been invited on India's Republic Day.
El-Sisi was elected as the sixth President of Egypt in May 2014. He graduated from the Egyptian Military Academy in 1977 and was appointed to the post of Director of Intelligence in 2010.
In August 2012, he was appointed as the Minister of Defense and the commander of the Egyptian Armed Forces where he remained until his resignation in March 2014 to run for the Presidency.
During the Republic Day Parade, a military contingent of the Egyptian Army will also march on the Rajpath along with other contingents. 160 Egyptian military personnel would represent the country's armed forces at the Republic Day Parade.

Republic Day parade in Kolkata: People allowed to witness parade after two Covid-hit years
After a gap of two years, the West Bengal government has decided to allow people to attend Republic Day parade on Red Road, Kolkata. The state government has deployed officers at various points close to the Red Road area. The Kolkata Police have deputed 3,500 personnel in at least 50 different junctures of the city.
Three Quick Response Team (QRT) teams, 11 Heavy Radio Flying Squad (HRFS), 58 Police Control Room (PCR) vans will be stationed around the Red Road area, an official said.

'Bharat Parv' event from 26 Jan at Red Fort lawns
Ministry of Tourism will organise a six-day mega event "Bharat Parv" at the Lawns and Gyan Path in front of Red Fort, Delhi from 26th to 31st January, as part of the Republic Day Celebrations.
The event will be inaugurated on 26th January at 5:30 pm and will be open to the general public from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm and from 12:00 noon to 10:00 pm from 27th onwards to 31st January.
